It seems as though 17-year old Gab Strum (aka Japanese Wallpaper) has accomplished more consecutive milestones within his active years than the average individual could achieve over a lifetime. Over the span of a few short weeks, the critical acclaim of Strum’s chimerical track ‘Breathe In (ft. Wafia)’ secured a slot on Zach Braff’s soundtrack for ‘Wish I Was Here’, and featured on the series finale of the Australian drama, ‘Offspring’, ultimately predicting his inevitable win of Triple J’s Unearthed High competition. Following his recently acquired prestige, Strum has released his stunning latest track, ‘Between Friends', featuring Jesse Davidson, proving his deserve for his success.
The track opens with a gentle xylophone refrain, drifting over a light drone. Given Strum’s ability to maintain a delicate, whimsical nature throughout the track, the tune builds in metallic texture, progressing into a frenetic fusion of electronic tonalities. Davidson’s warm, intertwining vocals seamlessly wrap around layers of dreamy electronica, his powerful lyricism attains the ability to trigger even the most repressed emotions within the listener – “If I wasn’t even there, how would that make you feel again? / If you wanna be my friend you’ve gotta stop being so damn cold to me.” Beneath Davidson’s earnest vocal melodies, the track shifts in and out of minimalist instrumentation, creating imagery of a subjective utopian setting within the listener’s mind, easing them into an illusory state of consciousness.
