Releasing her debut album Vows in 2011, New Zealand born singer, Kimbra was propelled into the international spotlight after her Grammy winning collaboration with Australian artist Gotye. Her follow-up album The Golden Echo is a bold and distinct effort, which cements the 24-year-old’s place in the music industry.

The New Zealand artist spent time writing in Los Angeles and working with artists such as Thundercat and Silver Chair’s Daniel Johns to produce a versatile record which proves how far Kimbra is willing to stretch her musical boundaries.

The album begins with the show-stopping electro-pop song, Teen Heat, which adds a tinge of R&B through the chorus. The lead single off the album, 90’s music which name-drops Johnson’s childhood pop inspirations such as TLC, brings nostalgic and distinctly soulful grooves that will bring back childhood memories. One of the standout songs on the album, which measures up to Pharrell Williams’ Happy, is the pristine Miracle. The striking strings and vocal experimentations brings a vintage disco vibe for a feel good sensation. Other tracks to look out for are Goldmine, which in a strong manner balances a sense of refinement and rebellion, as well as Carolina which clashes orchestral drums with auto-tune, developing a distinct tension.

Golden Echo brings to life a sense of juxtaposition, which Kimbra is known for; it is polished but in some areas raw, buoyant but with hints of unease, motivated and focused but still bursting with a distinct energy reflective of Kimbra’s public personality.

The display of her creative mind is ever so explicit. From soul to funk, the singer is not afraid to experiment with any style or sound. At times it feels as though the artist is trying to achieve too much at once. However in today’s mainstream pop scene, Kimbra is a rare breed of artist who tries to take their music to a distinct level through experimental Pro Tool sessions and collaborations with unknown names. It is clear that the Grammy winner has spent some time, exploring her inner self and testing her sounds and noise ability to the limits. While it is uncertain where Kimbra’s musical vision will journey to next, one thing is for certain… her golden talents will continue to echo through the music industry.

Kimbra’s Golden Echo was released on August 15.
