So there he was, this curly-haired man, crooning over his guitar with glittery V-shaped lights behind him.
Girls were swooning over his sugary lyrics and secretive smiles. Despite the swooning, glitzy lights and impressive band behind him, Vance was still as humble as ever.
In his head he was just strumming on his guitar to a girl, engrossed in his music. He would playfully banter with the audience before a song, as one might while singing to a lover.
He even brought out a surprise cover of "Because I Love You"- a fitting song for his romantic repertoire. Speaking of romance, this crowd was entirely made up of couples. It seems that every couple in Sydney believes Riptide is their 'special song' because they all chanted the lyrics without mistakes, and with plenty of adoring glances in between. It was a lovely scene, even for the most cynical of us.
Riptide ended the concert perfectly, there was such a buzz in the air that an encore surprisingly did not follow. A girl whispered "Riptide was so worth it" among the crowd, and I agreed. Although not a flashy or spontaneous performer, Vance performed his big hit with the soulful intimacy we had hoped for. "I just wanna, I just wanna know, if you're gonna, if you're gonna stay" echoed across the Metro theatre. You were left with a warm glow from the honest lyrics. The most romantic of audiences and the most romantic of performers- this concert was the perfect match.
