We caught up with Jacob Borg, the drummer of sitar-pop-rock-vibey geniuses, Jinja Safari, to chat about pre-show rituals, life-time pizza supplies and crazy fans ahead of Maitland's Gum Ball Festival.
What’s the number 1 thing about being in the band?
Im gonna take this one as the number 1 best about being in the band. The best thing is trying to make your band mates laugh, if you succeed you're top dog.
What’s the craziest fan moment you have experience?
At one show a fan brought along an organic carrot and tried to get us all to have a bite. Joe hates vegetables and slapped the carrot in the face.
On a scale of 1 to getting a free life time supply of pizza, how excited are you guys for The Gum Ball?
I'd say as excited as receiving a scratch card that keeps winning a free scratch card, the ultimate repeated winning feeling. So an 8.5. When we arrive it'll be a 10 and we'll be fat.
Are there any bands that you’re pumped to catch at the Gum Ball festival?
My good buddies Tropical Zombie are playing. They're a dancey, feel good band that'll make you smile till your hands go numb.
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
I usually just have a good ol' fashioned sit down. Then I get up half an hour before our set and teach Joe how to stretch his quads properly, he never gets it right and that's dangerous.
Is there going to be any new music sometime soon or have things been busy with Pepa’s new single?
Joe's just finished a song called "Does this talking annoy you?" and Stral's been riding his motorcycle all over town. But on a serious note there is new Jinja tunes in the pipeline and its looking hollow as. Camerons new single is fantastic isn't it!?
You seem to tour non-stop and though it’s excellent for fans, it must be taxing on you. What motivates you to tour so extensively?
I personally love touring and will never get sick of it. As for the other boys it might be a bit different, having other better halves and what not. Motivation would be having the mentality that this could well be the last tour we ever do so make it a good one. Having that thought in the back of your mind is a good way to stop you nagging out.
Do you have anything special planned for your performance at Gum Ball?
Just good ol' fashioned rock 'n' roll baby.
Is it going to be weird (in a good way) playing to a wider range of audience members since it’s a family festival?
Well we played Gumball Ball two years ago and we had a great response. We had young kids, old kids, adults, old adults come up to us and have a chuckle. We are very used to having a wider range of audience members.
You can catch Jinja alongside King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Hoodoo Gurus and plenty more at Gum Ball Festival check here for ticket details
