What do you do when you have a little sister who loves Thirty Seconds to Mars? Take her to their Sydney gig, of course.
After making several jokes about how we were “closer to the edge” when seeing them walk on stage, the anticipation grew to inexplicable heights when the lights dimmed and thousands of girls screamed at the sight of Jared Leto gracing our presence (yes I was one of those girls).
Starting set off with Birth and an incredibly high energy, they quickly set the bar of what to expect for the night. One thing I did discover that Jared Leto was in fact Jesus with his long mane and strikingly good looks. If he tells you to - dance, jump, sing or scream - you don’t think twice about it, you just do it.
Among his blessings to the crowd he almost performed a Jesus-like stunt pulling a blind fan out of the crowd on stage. It is undeniable that he could charm the pants off anyone he wanted to after being flirty with the crowd, at one point asking some girls in the crowd to “show me your map of Tassie”- which according to him was a dare and was something he was unsure of what it meant. Nonetheless the wow factor of the gig was really the entertainment value it held rather than the music itself. Giant balloons and confetti came falling from the ceiling during Kings and Queens, which at first were fun but after the ginormous balloons became slightly annoying.
The set was filled with fan favourites, like an acoustic rendition of The Kill, then Closer to the Edge before ending on Up in the Air which saw a number of people jump up on stage with Jared Leto and Co. Despite the fact that it could have just been the Jared Leto show rather than a Thirty Seconds to Mars gig (not to say that Tomo and Shannon have no talent but they were put on the backburner for majority of the gig on the far right and left of the stage which you could barely see), it was a pretty great gig.
My sister was enjoying herself so much that she was crying from happiness that she was and would turn to me with a huge smile on her face and continue to scream out the lyrics to each song. So from a person who is not a huge fan of Thirty Seconds to Mars who went with someone who is a huge fan, I thought they put on one of the best shows I have seen and I now understand why my sister is utterly in love with them.
