Liam Gallagher, asshole or angel? I’m totally kidding we all know the answer to that. Despite whatever opinion you have on his personality you can’t deny his talent. That talent which is standing completely still holding a towel behind his back during everyone song of his set. In all seriousness though his music was superb. (Especially the throwback to the 90’s Oasis hit, Wonderwall.)
The evening began with Davey Lane rocking some denim on denim and sweetly serenading us with his silky smooth voice. Although I was deaf in one ear after the first song, their grunge-y mix of Hoodoo Gurus and Arctic Monkeys influences proved to be quite pleasing. Unpredictable changes from major to minor chords in the middle of songs kept the audience on their toes. It was made all the more better when they accompanied their tunes with high energy levels (something Mr Gallagher could definitely work on). The fact that their music didn’t suck and the smiles they had plastered to their faces made for a good atmosphere and a high expectation for the rest of the night.
If you were expecting a chillaxed interval between the two bands then you definitely picked the wrong concert. Whether it was because the sound guys were already deaf or they wanted to make everyone deaf, I have never experienced louder interval music ever.
It was hard to tell whether the music had finally gotten quieter or if I was now partially deaf so it just seemed quieter but regardless of my hearing loss the first few songs were going well. The only issue with the performance was Gallagher’s energy, or rather lack there of. Standing stock-still almost the entire time with his hands behind his back he gave off a very negative vibe and seemed that he did not want to be there at all (it’s such a hard lifestyle to be a full-time rockstar and opinionated celebrity) - they did have a good mix of songs though. Alternating between fast and slow-paced tunes, the crowd had time to relax before they got hyped up again for the up beat numbers.
As the middle of the concert approached us my legs were beginning to get tired but as soon as those first strums of the guitar began of Wonderwall I did let out a little fan-girl squeal. I thoroughly enjoyed the throw back as I’m sure the rest of the crowd singing along did but again Gallagher’s negative vibe came across when he hastily blurted, “Now back to the present” after the song had finished. Things were then going smoothly until a few songs later he cut off short and said, “That was shit we’re doing it again” and then they did… After the song was played for the second time through he went back to standing with his hands behind his back and displaying a very evident lack of pleasure in what he was doing.
The rest of the songs again were a good mixture of grunge-y Nirvana-ish vibes that the screaming crowd was thoroughly enjoying. The last few songs were faced paced with a hint of some swing and blues thrown in which were big crowd pleasers as well. Although the music was energetic, Gallagher was still not into it. He had finished off the last song and walked off the stage but was back on for the encore in record time, making it very clear that he just wanted the night to be over and done with. Before the encore song had even finished he said, “See you next year” and walked off, leaving the band to finish the last 30 seconds of the song. Despite his clear lack of enthusiasm and little to no crowd interaction the music throughout the night was outstanding. Gallagher clearly lived up to his personal reputation but his music also lived up to it’s remarkably high standard.
