Brisbane’s own indie-popsters, The Jungle Giants have gained nationwide recognition with the release of their first (fingers crossed of many) LP, Learn To Exist. Filled with indie-pop shuffling tracks and also the occasional down tempo sing-a-long, it’s no surprise that audiences all over Oz have lusted for anything and everything to do with these ‘Jungle Giants’.
After touring around Australia, the four-piece decided to grace the stage of the Metro Theatre once more with a new round of support acts. Bec & Ben, a two, three or five piece rock outfit pumped rhythm into the audience and raised morale after the drizzly weather of Sydney drenched the queue outside. A drummer wearing a shirt that barely touched his belly button and another guitarist evolved the band into a five piece to finish of their action set.
Melbourne producer Muscles jumped on stage creating a dance party within the walls of the Metro. Gracing the audience with a collection of electronic music, he continued to lift the energy levels of the crowd. After playing a quick DJ set, Muscles left the stage without playing any of his classics :( (Ice Cream, Hey Muscles I Love You).
Self-described as an ‘orchestra of indie/dance rock’, Twinsy pumped musical bliss through the veins of all the screaming girls (and guys) in the crowd. The lovechild of Michael Belsar (Hunting Grounds) and Guy Chappell (Yacht Club DJs), Twinsy produce some of the finest new dance tunes in Australia. Twinsy finished off their set with the 3rd most played song on Triple J in 2012, Water Bombs. Driving sax and catchy vocals, as well as The Jungle Giants guitarist, Cesira, ripping a solo ended the set with a perfect bang.
Desperate cries from almost a thousand indie-pop-hungry teenagers welcomed Sam, Keelan, Cesira and Dooris' to the stage. Starting off with ‘Come and Be Alone With Me’, the band got everyone singing and dancing from the get go. Within the first 15 minutes, Andrew (Dooris), the bassist was embracing the crowd in the form of a surf. Whether it was an alcohol fuelled move or just one for the lols, everyone loved it. Playing a combination of new and old music, lead singer, Sam Hales got everyone involved and loving the performance. Shortly after releasing the album, the band decided that the closing track ‘Home’ could be played in a jazzier way, getting rid of the synth and piano. The final result is a funky jam which got everyone bopping along. ‘I Am What You Want Me To Be’, a popular single off the album was next which was widely appreciated by the moshing fans. The band left the stage and was followed by chants of “ENCORE!!”. Their response to this call was sending Sam out on stage to perform the solo track ‘Devil’s In The Detail’ with the help of the drunken harmonies of Dooris. They finished of their adrenaline filled set with ‘She’s A Riot’, the bands most popular song coming in at #83 on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 2012.
Their shining debut LP ‘Learn to Exist’ has attracted varieties of affectionate fans and steaming reviews through its success. The young band has come so far since their birth and I have a feeling the future is looking very promising for these indie-popsters.
