The Jungle Giants (Sam Hales) Q&A

We were at your show at the Metro and had an absolute blast! How's it been touring with Northeast Party House and The Creases?

It's been great haha. We've known the Northeast guys for ages and have just met The Creases. We've been having an insane time with them. They've all been coming onstage during our set to crowd surf and Jarrod from the creases has been playing guitar in one of our songs. It's been a party

What are your tour highlights so far?

One of the band members on this tour did a poo in their pants while jumping on my bed after the Metro show. It was the funniest thing I've ever seen.

Do you have any rituals or habits whilst touring?

I like to listen to new music. I've been smashing Earl Sweatshirts new record 'Doris'. We've also started up a snooker competition this tour.

What inspired the 'Learn To Exist' LP title?

It's based on the idea that all the songs came from a really reflective period in my life. Turning 20 and not being a teen anymore, I felt like lots of my values were changing, and I was only starting to get an idea of who I could be and what I want to do. Learn to Exist reflects that. All four of us are starting to learn who we are.

What are your favourite tracks from the album?

I Am What You Want Me To Be and Home.

You guys have some pretty kewl/crazy fans. What's the craziest thing that someone has ever done for you/sent you/told you?

Heaps of fans have been bringing us biscuits this tour which has been funny. I guess the weirdest things that's happened was when someone wrote "I love The Jungle Giants" in chalk on the road outside my house.

What advice would you give to any high school bands or young aspiring performers?

Work on your songs. I guess some bands think that having a good presence or good gear is all it takes. If you've got good songs, people can like your music, and the rest follows behind.

If you could make any band compulsory for the whole world to listen to (aside from your group) who would it be?

Arcade Fire

If you weren't in a band, what would you be doing?

I dunno, acting maybe. I used to be pretty into that.

Where did the name The Jungle Giants come from?

Siras grandad used to have this massive backyard. We used to call it the Jungle. When we were kids, for a few years we were convinced there was some kind of massive yeti or something living in it. We kept seeing something through the trees. Eventually it disappeared but we've been weirded out by that yard ever since. Eventually when we were starting the band we figured it would be cool to name it after that thing in her Grandads garden.

I know it's not been long since your debut LP, but when can we expect some more bangerzz/tunes from you?

Hopefully not too long. I've been writing heaps in my studio lately. We're headed off to a house somewhere in the mountains after this tour to write and demo some new stuff.

Who would win in a fight, an electric eel with superpowers that allow it to go on land, or a grizzly bear with taser guns for teeth?

The eel
