Jarrah McCarty-Smith, the bass player of Snakadaktal, was kind enough to answer some of our questions. Tonight (30/8/13) they’ll be playing some sick tunes at the Metro Theatre, BE THURR OR B SQUARE. We’ll be taking pictures and writing some words about it, so make sure you check back for that fabulous coverage.
1. It’s quite possibly the most over-asked question of all time, but nonetheless, how did the formation of Snakadaktal occur?
It was a desire to play music, that brought us together while attending the same High School.
2. In 2011 you guys managed to win Unearthed High - something most high school bands only really ever dream about. Would you consider yourselves one of those bands, or was this something you guys made a very clear goal from day one?
We definitely were one of those bands who dreamed about it and never thought it could happen.
3. Did you know going it to it that perhaps you guys had an edge over your competition?
I felt the playing field fairly even, you just never know.
4. You then released your first eponymous EP, which managed to gather a major amount of hype via Triple J. Considering you we’re all still in High School, did it all feel incredibly surreal to know you had such a fan base at such a young age, or did you not notice it?
There was definitely evidence of a fan base but no one could believe it.
5. The stand out song on the EP for most people I imagine would be ‘Air’, which would go on to make #22 on Triple J’s hottest 100 of 2011. Did you have a feeling when writing it that it was going to become something particularly special?
It was actually the one song that almost didn’t make the EP, we were really happy and surprised by the growing support of Air.
6. What was it like to tour with Alt-J?
Supporting such a talented group of individuals was super inspiring for us all, we had awesome time.
7. Were there any standout aspects of that experience that you felt you learned from?
There live show was very developed and fine tuned and we wish to improve ours and bring it to the next level with our new music.
8. Congratulations on releasing your debut album ‘Sleep in the Water.’Do you feel that it writing it was very natural process?
It comes naturally and we feel comfortable about our writing, but I couldn’t explain how it happens.
9. What is your favourite track off the LP?
Fall Underneath would have be my favourite purely because we all write all together which always feel good and happy.
10. Having just released your LP, new material is a little while off, however, what do you feel is next for Snakadaktal?
Everybody loves new music so I feel that we will be needing to write new album soon, how soon I don’t know.
11. What are 3 random facts about yourself?
Hommus by the kilos, I enjoy gardening and I was born in a big baking bowl filled with water.
12. What was the first gig you ever went to, any good stories?
First proper gig for me was Presets at Festival Hall, The whole night was blurry exciting experience with everyone banging on their seats and stamping their feet to get them to do a encore.
13. Do you snack a lot? (Had to be done.)
Yep and the kilos of hommus are getting me fat.
Make sure you check it out!
