Fresh off his national tour with indie gems, Thelma Plum and Emma Louise, Patrick James is carving out a comfortable spot in the Australian music, and the Sydney all ages scene. This Friday (5th of July) he’s playing his own headline show at Paddington Uniting Church. We’re giving away a double pass and his EP on facebook, make sure you enter! http://on.fb.me/129c27S He answered a few of our questions.

Where are you from?

I am from Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast but now live in Sydney.

Who are your main influences?

So many bands and artists, but at the moment I am loving James Taylor and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. I also love a lot of contemporary music that is coming out today like Ball Park Music and Something For Kate.

What inspired you to write your own music?

I remember listening to Eric Clapton unplugged and thinking to myself ‘I have to start Writing’. Its definitely a gradual process for me though, a lot of different music has inspired me as I write more and more.

How many instruments do you play?

I sing, play the piano and guitar as my 3 main instruments and I dabble in drums.

What was the first concert you went to?

Wolfmother when I was in year 8. Ended badly, I wasn’t tall enough to be in the mosh but I went for it anyway.

What was the first gig you played?

A cafe called Cedros cafe in Port Macquarie.

What were your aspirations when you were growing up?

I really wanted to tour and play in a lot of different bands. I was just attracted to the idea of being a professional musician. That was the main reason I moved to Sydney, so I could be in a place with a heap of opportunities like that.

What’s the last song you listened to?

Ryan Adams- Let it Ride

What bands have you been listening to lately?

I have been listening to a lot of Aussie rock like Something for Kate and You Am I. Really loving that stuff at the moment and also a guy from the UK called Tom Odell.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Playing music to big crowds and everyone is singing the words. Album 4 or 5

- I went to school with the missile (James Magnussen)
