On the 27th of February, the UNSW Roundhouse was overthrown by 2200 of the coolest people in Sydney for a free Jinja Safari concert
Sea Legs started off the night with their vibrant tunes. From Bateau Bay on the Central Coast, Byron, Cail, Tim and Nick make up the indie rock bliss that is Sea Legs. The perfect combination of pop hooks and stage presence made for a dandy set.
Cub Scouts are a phenomenal band. Zoe, Tim, Sam, Daniel and Andrew make up this Brisbane group. Their soaring tunes have become incredibly popular over the last few months and they’ve released their powerful debut EP, Told You So. They played a few new songs, highlights were Evie (a lovely song about Tim Nelson’s dog) Do You Hear, and a mash-up of pop songs from Pussy Cat Dolls to Beyonce. Their practically perfect indie pop has a fluidity that is one of many contributing factors of Cub Scouts’ unavoidable charisma. Finishing up with their new song Pool (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=5ULtpeqGNN8#at=54) it was sad to see them leave the stage. Cub Scouts will be doing another all ages Sydney show at the Lair (Metro Theatre) on the 10th of March, with fellow Brisbanians, Millions.
Cub Scouts are an absolute must-see and their unique brand of dance pop is absolutely addictive.
After Cub Scouts had finished, they spent quite a while setting up the stage. There was a massive animal skin pattern at the back, a string of colourful flags and a big blue beach umbrella, and these simple ideas were unbelievably effective, literally setting the stage for Jinja’s outstanding performance.
Premiering the songs to be released on their album later in the year, the night was a testing ground for their new work. Reminiscent of their last album’s feel, all the songs were overwhelmingly good. Jinja Safari are known for their wild stage presence, and they did not fail to deliver. The whole performance was fun and energetic. Jinja Safari are definitely a band to look out for.
A fantastic night, with a great crowd, this free show absolutely exceeded all expectations. Sea Legs, Cub Scouts and Jinja Safari are all ready for world domination.
